Wait for a Much Smaller or Non-Existent Notch

If you buy a flagship iPhone in 2020, it will have a notch.

Apple's infamous notch houses important sensors, but it has also drawn the ire of many smartphone users due to its intrusiveness.

Fortunately, Apple is reportedly looking to slim down, and/or eliminate, the notch on future iPhone models.

Apple is reportedly exploring ways to combine Face ID and the front-facing camera a move that could reduce the size of the notch.

Last year Apple supplier AMS announced new sensor technology that could help the company deliver a smaller notch on upcoming iPhones.

“Smartphone OEMs today are striving to maximize their products’ screen-to-body ratio, reducing the bezel area as much as possible on the display’s face,” said David Moon, Senior Marketing Manager at ams. “The TCS3701 enables phone designers to take this trend to a new level, potentially eliminating the bezel entirely."

An analyst from Credit Suisse in Asia believes Apple will release an iPhone without a notch or Face ID in 2021 with the phones relying on a full screen fingerprint sensor.

Economic Daily News claims Apple is meeting with, or has met with, a Taiwanese touchscreen manufacturer to discuss the development of an iPhone with an under-the-screen fingerprint reader.

The publication states that Apple plans to use Qualcomm's ultrasonic fingerprint sensor inside an iPhone in 2021. Initially it had said either 2020 or 2021.

Earlier this year Japanese blog Mac Otakara today shared a supposed 3D printed mockup of a 5.5-inch ‌iPhone with a notch-free design and USB-C port.

These mockups are likely based on devices currently in development so there's no guarantee this design sees the light of day.

According to leaker Ice Universe, Apple "is working hard to overcome the under-screen camera" which means we could see the notch disappear next year.

In a more recent tweet, Ice Universe claims that the iPhone 13 will still have a notch, but that it will be shorter than the one found on previous models.

Leakers L0vetodream and LeaksApplePro also claim the iPhone 13 will have Touch ID built-in underneath the display.

LeaksApplePro says the iPhone 13 series will have "Touch ID in half the screen (from the middle to bottom so you can press where you want)."

Of course, we've also heard from other sources who state that the current iPhone 13 prototypes don't have "underscreen Touch ID" as of right now.

Things are still in flux, but if you want a smaller or non-existent notch, you'll have to wait until next year. At the very least.
